Framed color lithograph of “The Allan Line New Steamers” ship, the Calgarian. Wood frame. The Scotsman Hugh Allan came to Montreal in 1826 from a shipping family. In 1854, he founded the Montreal Ocean Steamship Company, later Allan Line, which specialized in the transport of emigrants. The Calgarian, launched in 1913, was at the time the largest and fastest steamship in America. Carrying up to 2,200 passengers, she was built to meet Canadian emigration regulations. Used as a merchant ship during the First World War, it was sunk by a German submarine in 1918.
