Lithograph reproduction. All the historic buildings in this scene were demolished to make way for the new Palais de Justice. Rue St-Gabriel seen from Rue Craig, with the Champ de Mars to the left. The old Hôtel de France in the foreground has disappeared stone by stone, and will be rebuilt elsewhere. Further up the street stands the Hôtel Saint-Gabriel, founded in 1754 and the oldest hotel in North America.

Historical context
This lithograph by Robert Dinnis Wilson was originally published in Eric McLean’s 1964 book The Living Past of Montreal. The book aimed to document the built heritage of Old Montreal at the time of the demolitions surrounding the construction of the new courthouse (1965-1971), when the neighborhood was affected by the decline of port activities.
