Historical context
On November 16, 1837, Archibald Acheson, Count Gosford (1776-1849), Governor of Lower Canada, issued arrest warrants for 26 leaders of the Patriote movement. He accused them of treason and rebellion. One of these was Louis-Joseph Papineau (1786-1871), leader of the Parti patriote. With Papineau nowhere to be found, Gosford offered a colossal reward of £1,000 for his capture on December 1.
