Historical context
Au début du 19e siècle, les aménagements portuaires de l’île de Montréal sont rudimentaires. L’accostage sur les rives est réservé aux petites embarcations et les plus grosses sont dirigées vers l’ile Normand, située en face de Montréal, sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent. Graduellement, des particuliers installent des quais privés à proximité du Vieux-Montréal en y reliant divers îlots.
