Historical context
Decades before blacks moved from Old Montreal to the faubourg Saint-Antoine, they helped make the Lachine Canal and the waterways surrounding the island of Montreal vibrant canals. In the 1820s, many steamboat cooks, waiters and workers were black men and women.
