Plate

The plate is complete, with only a few small chips missing from the rim. The plate is circular with a plain rim. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the wall is low and the base is flat. The plate rests on a small milled foot, located in line with the outer wall, which is slightly curved and free of glaze. The plate has a few cracks, chips and crazing around the rim; the decoration is hand-painted in blue underglaze and red overglaze, with touches of gilding, in the Imari style. It is of the lacustrian type. The painted decoration is visible on the inner border and on the inner background. The frieze consists of a ribbon traced in blue and outlined with a line; it is trimmed with a latticework of alternating X’s and rhombuses, topped in places with a small pearl, all traced in blue. The border is adorned with three leafy, flowering branches arranged in a triangle. These branches are traced and painted in red, with touches of gold. The central decoration is encircled by a double ring. It consists of two islets traced and painted in blue. In the foreground is the main island, lined with low cliffs and supporting two buildings, one of which resembles a double-roofed pagoda, rocks and various trees; a mountain rises to the right. Shrubs, a tree and branches have been added in red. In the background is the secondary island, lined with rocks, a building and a high mountain. Touches of red have been added to the island. An islet supporting a tall pagoda has been outlined in red and painted gold.
