Plate
The plate is circular in shape, with a plain rim pinched at regular intervals. It is complete except for a small chip on the rim. The rim is thick and slightly domed. The rim slopes slightly inwards, the wall is curved and the base is slightly domed. On the reverse, the plate rests on a small milled foot; the bottom is recessed and flat. There are three pernette marks on the reverse. There is a mark printed in blue under the base: eight-petal flower. There are linear marks on the inner base; the decoration is applied by transfer printed; it is blue in color and has an oriental motif (Boy on buffalo). The printed decoration is visible on the marli, on the wall and on the inner background. The decoration on the marli consists of two different elements repeated in alternation. The first is a motif resembling a butterfly with outstretched wings, seen from the front: it is decorated with two half-flowers ending in two curved plant stems with three beads. This motif is flanked by a wide band underlined by a double line and trimmed with small ovals with crosses arranged in a staggered pattern. The wall is decorated with a similar band, with the exception of the butterflies, which are replaced by lobed half-flowers. The background decoration is surrounded by a ring that borders the wall’s entablature. It depicts an oriental scene with a young man riding a buffalo (Boy on buffalo). The décor features a rocky terrace, partly covered with grass and trees, in the center of which winds a path leading to a multi-storey temple. The main scene features a buffalo seen in profile to the left, ridden by a young child whose left arm points upwards at the back, and who wears a double-lobed headdress. In front of the animal stands a man wearing a headdress, seen from three-quarters to the right. Beside him stands a youth, also wearing a double-lobed headdress and holding a bare branch. They stand before a domed rock. A bamboo-covered rock is visible in the background. The rendering of the decoration is clear. The junction of the frieze and the border is visible.
