The Montreal World’s Fair (Expo 67) was the most important event in Canada’s centennial celebrations in 1967. Under the humanist theme of “Man and His World”, inspired by one of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s works, the Expo welcomed over 50 million visitors, and 120 governments were represented in several thematic pavilions.
Among the many distinguished guests who set foot on Montreal soil during the six months of Expo 67 were Prince Rainier III of Monaco and his wife, Princess and former actress Grace Kelly, both of whom can be seen in the foreground of this photo. Accompanied by their three children, the Monegasque couple will be received by Mayor Jean Drapeau at Montreal City Hall. The highlight of the princely couple’s visit to Montreal, however, was on July 18, 1967, when Expo celebrated the Principality of Monaco with a reception at the Monegasque pavilion.
