Notary cap

Notary cap in black silk velvet, embroidered with pink flowers, leaves and blue ribbon, embroidered initials “L.J.P.” and embellished with a wire and wood tassel. The inner cap is lined in cotton. This bonnet was handmade to order by a milliner and embroiderer. Hat once belonged to Louis-Joseph Papineau.

Historical context

Ce bonnet de notaire en soie noire, portant deux glands de bois et brodé de motifs en forme de fleurs, de feuilles et de ruban bleu, porte les initiales de son propriétaire, Louis-Joseph Papineau. Fait sur mesure par une chapelière, ce bonnet, symbole de la profession de notaire, était porté par Papineau dans l’exercice de ses fonctions ou lorsqu’il recevait ses censitaires chez lui.
