Historical context

Towards the end of the 19th century, private clubs became a refuge for men wishing to escape family worries. All it took was sponsorship and a membership fee. In Montreal, there were more than twenty such clubs, including the Renaissance Club, the Beaver Club and the Saint-Denis Club. Most have ceased to exist.
