Lid for anchovy paste jar
The lid is complete; a good portion of the rim is broken, but the shards have been preserved. It is circular in shape, with a slightly domed top and straight rim. The wall is high, with a wide, flat base; the inside of the lid is recessed and slightly concave. The face of the lid is stained with iron rust; the decoration is printed in black underglaze on the top of the lid. The decoration occupies the entire surface of the lid. It is circumscribed by a ring of small, solid pearls underlined by a fillet. The main decoration features an adapted copy of the coat of arms of Great Britain in the center; there are printed inscriptions, arranged in a cross around the coat of arms. At the top, in two registers: BURGESS’S Genuine; on the left, in four registers: The original FishSauce Warehouse; on the right, in five registers: 107 Strand corner of the Savoysteps London; at the base, in two registers: Anchovy Paste for Toast Biscuit & c.
