Historical context
This ceramic beer bottle features a “Lightning” closure, a toggle system mainly used on soft-drink bottles. Invented and patented in New York in 1875, it consists of a porcelain seal with a rubber gasket attached to a wire ring. These pivoting closures were very popular between 1880 and 1920.
