Ink bottle
The bottle is complete; it has been broken and then repaired with glue. It is cylindrical in shape, with an angular, conical shoulder; the neck is cylindrical, short and slightly tapered at the top. The neck is in the form of a wide band, flaring out at the top and almost flat. The base is beveled. The base is slightly domed. The body is gray in color, covered with a brown ferrous coating and a salt glaze, giving it a shiny appearance. The lower part of the wall is inscribed with intaglio printing in seven registers, the first five separated from the last two by an incised horizontal line: VITREOUS STONE BOTTLES J. BOURNE & SON PATENTEES DENBY POTTERY NEAR DERBY —————- P & J. ARNOLD LONDON ; There is an intaglio ring plate at the base of the neck. The dark-brown coating that covers the entire surface decorates the bottle; the salt glaze lends a glossy appearance to certain areas of the surface.
