Ink bottle
The bottle is complete. It is cylindrical in shape, with an angular, conical shoulder; the neck is cylindrical, short and slightly tapered at the top. The neck is shaped like a wide band, flaring out at the top and flat at the apex; the neck has a small pouring spout with an oval apex. The base is beveled. The base is slightly domed. The body is gray in color, covered with a brown ferrous coating and a salt glaze, giving it a shiny appearance. The lower part of the wall features a square cartouche with a domed top, made by intaglio printing; it presents inscriptions made in sequence, in seven registers: VITREOUS STONE BOTTLES J. BOURNE & SON PATENTEES DENBY POTTERY NEAR DERBY P & J. ARNOLD LONDON. Under the cartouche is the word ENGLAND. The surface is stained with iron rust. INWood has been hand-written in red under the base; there is a recessed annular groove at the base of the neck. The dark brown coating that covers the entire surface decorates the bottle; the salt glaze gives the surface a shiny appearance.
