Historical context
This harpoon head has been crafted from walrus ivory by the Inuit and their Thule (or Inuit) ancestors for some 800 years. A strip of sealskin is tied to the center of this reproduction. These harpoon heads, now mainly made of metal, are used to hunt marine mammals such as seals, walruses and belugas.
