Historical context

This is a map of the western part of New France. The map is part of a 4-volume world atlas published in the mid-18th century by Italian cartographer Antonio Zatta. This Venetian cartographer was the most eminent of his time (2nd half of the 18th and early 19th centuries). He replaced the mythical elements of 17th-century maps with more representative ones. His quest for the utmost precision and attention to detail also set him apart.
