Flag

This flag, featuring a former CBC/Radio-Canada logo, served as an advertising medium for the Canadian public broadcaster. Founded on November 2, 1936, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was created in the wake of the Aird Commission, which was charged with investigating the state of radio in Canada in the late 1920s. Concerned about Canadian identity under the influence of American radio stations, the commissioners recommended in their report, tabled in 1929, the creation of a national public network to foster the Canadian cultural industry. This led to the creation of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission in 1932, eventually replaced by CBC/Radio-Canada in 1936.

Over the years, CBC/Radio-Canada has refined its image and visual identity through various logos. The logo on this flag, composed of 28 pieces, was inaugurated in 1974 and is the work of Toronto graphic design firm Burton Kramer and Associates. In the center is the letter “C”, for “Canada”, which spreads out in all directions, reflecting the Company’s radio and television waves. From 1974 to 1986, the logo is multicolored, but is standardized in blue from 1986 to 1992.
