This passport of Quebec, accompanied by its case, was produced in 1975 as part of a fund-raising campaign organized by the Parti québécois for the provincial elections of November 15, 1976. This was the first edition of the passport. A new version went on sale on the Parti québécois website the day after Fête nationale 2022.
The Parti québécois (PQ) is a nationalist political party in Quebec, created in 1968 from the merger of the Mouvement Souveraineté-Association and the Ralliement national. René Lévesque (1922-1987), a former journalist, was the party’s first leader. A former member of the Liberal Party, he held this position until 1985. He led the PQ through its first two elections, with disappointing results, before being elected Premier of Quebec.
In the 1976 election, the PQ won with 41.4% of the vote, ahead of the Liberals led by Robert Bourassa (1933-1996). This victory was largely due to the party’s communications strategy during the campaign, as illustrated by this passport, in which the party promised to hold a referendum on Quebec sovereignty. The party held two unsuccessful referendums in 1980 and 1995.
