Historical context
Suite à la rébellion de 1838, plus de 800 patriotes se retrouvent derrière les barreaux. En vertu de la loi martiale en vigueur, quatre-vingt-dix-neuf sont condamnés à mort. Douze sont exécutés par pendaison. Cinquante-huit autres voient leur sentence commuée en déportation vers la colonie pénitentiaire britannique d’Australie. Partis de Québec en septembre 1839, ils y arrivent au bout d’un voyage pénible de cinq mois.
