Dish

The dish is complete; a good portion of the glaze around the rim is missing and some breaks have been repaired with metal studs. It is circular in shape with a wavy rim. The rim is wide and slopes inwards, while the wall curves towards the flat bottom. The dish rests on a ring-shaped foot, the base of which is free of glaze. The center is recessed and flat. The reverse shows three traces of pernette in a triangular pattern. The glaze on the reverse shows small needle holes. The foot has a hole drilled through its wall, the inside of which is covered with enamel; the hole is broken. The enamel on the front is shiny. There is a mark painted in blue under the base, in two registers: L: S claw. There are 18 copper metal studs on the reverse, the ends of which are inserted in as many pairs of circular holes drilled in the reverse of the dish ; The decoration is hand-painted in cobalt blue, underglaze. The decoration is hand-painted in cobalt blue, underglaze, with a scenic plant motif (tea tree) on the front and a geometric design on the reverse. The decoration is outlined by a wavy fillet painted on the border, near the rim. The decoration occupies the marli and the background. The marli decoration consists of two different motifs repeated in alternation: one is a wavy medallion bordered by two acanthus leaves and a herbaceous pearl; the medallion is adorned with a motif of four herbaceous pearls. The other design is a wavy medallion with a trifoliate motif, surmounted by a long triangle with a leaf in reserve and scrolls. The space between these motifs is decorated with a herbaceous pearl. The background decoration is encircled by two rings, one of which is double; the outer ring supports a row of braces. The main decoration consists of a large, leafy, flowering tree emerging from a triangular shape with the center in reserve, and resting on an undulating terrace. Behind the tree extends a fence made of four vertical posts and two horizontal wires. Leafy and flowering plants rise from the terrace. The reverse is decorated with a row of alternating star and pearl rings.
