Dish

The dish is complete. It is circular with a plain rim. The rim is flat and slopes slightly inwards, the wall is low and curves towards the bottom, which is not quite flat. On the reverse, the dish rests on a ring-shaped foot, the base of which is free of glaze. The center is recessed and slightly domed. The foot is pierced by a fixing hole, the inside of which is covered with enamel. The body is beige, and the object is covered with a bluish-white enamel. There are three pernette marks arranged in a triangle on the reverse. There is a mark painted under the base: 19; The decoration is hand-painted in blue on the front and reverse. It features a figurative motif in the style of China’s Transitional period. It is painted on the rim, the wing, the wall and the bottom; it is traced in very dark blue, almost black, and painted in dark blue and very dark blue. The rim and inner edge are painted blue. The decoration on the wing extends over the wall and around the base. This decoration is divided into compartments of two different widths, delimited by a blue painted line; the larger ones are decorated with two different motifs placed alternately: a figure and a flower. The figure, male and Oriental in style, is seen from the front and draped; he is seated on a plain terrace, with a fence and stylized rocks and trees in the background. The flower is painted atop a long leafy stem and surrounded by two scrolls or horns of plenty, and at its feet are scrolls. The smaller compartments, which are inserted between the larger ones, are all decorated with the same motif, probably a tulip on a long stem with double, mirrored leaves; the smaller compartments are bordered by two wavy vertical lines. The background decoration is encircled by a ring decorated with two different alternating motifs, including a wheel edged with scrolls and a recumbent 8. The main decoration features a scene with two male figures dressed in oriental style. One, seen in three-quarter view, holds a large fan in his hands, and stands on a bank bordering a body of water, while the other, on the opposite bank, is seen in profile, holding a spherical shape in his hands; he is standing in front of the corner of a building flanked by trees. In the background is an island covered with rocks and trees. On the reverse, the dish is decorated with compartments; delimited by a line, they are adorned with a ring with a central pearl.
