Dish

The dish is complete; there is a small chip on the rim and a break near the edge has been repaired with wire and metal studs. It is circular in shape with a plain rim. The rim is thin and slopes inwards, while its wall curves towards the bottom, which is flat. On the reverse, it rests on a ring-shaped foot, with a wide, glaze-free, partly flat, beveled base. The center is recessed and flat. It shows firing cracks and traces of small radiating grooves. The foot is stained with iron rust. The foot is imprinted with fine sand; there are also traces of sand in the glaze on the face. The center of the face has small flaws in the glaze. The rim has lost some of its glaze. The broken and repaired part shows pairs of small circular holes running through the dish; the three pairs near the rim are each crossed by a white metal stud, either lead or tin. The three holes on the wall are arranged in a triangle, with white metal studs and wires running through them; the decoration is molded and hand-painted in blue on the front and back of the object. The molded decoration is visible on the marli face; it consists of pairs of grooves between a slight bulge, perpendicular to the edge and symmetrically distributed from the edge to the wall. The painted decoration is animal-like, in the Kraak style from China. The inner surface of the object is entirely decorated. There is a fillet near the rim, on which an uneven band has been painted in blue. The rim and wall are decorated with compartments, divided into two alternating types. The larger compartments are trapezoidal in shape, with rounded upper corners and pointed centers; their outer perimeter is made of a single fillet, which surrounds a double fillet whose center is painted blue. Each houses a different wrapped object, similar to the emblems of the Eight Immortals or the Eight Precious Objects, or a long-stemmed flower resembling a sunflower. Between these compartments are strips of the same length, but narrower than the compartments; their edges are solid. They are separated into three zones by double horizontal arched and painted lines: their central part is trimmed with a Chinese knot, i.e. a cord folded into a U with a central ring, while the ends of the tabs are adorned with superimposed rows of scales or solid angled sticks. These tongues are painted between pairs of molded grooves. The central decoration is encircled by a double ring, within which are two concentric octagons with wavy sides and pointed corners, the one on the outside being in reserve and the other solid. The space outside the octagons is painted blue and trimmed with alternating scales and sticks. The main decoration consists of a lake scene, featuring two birds seen in profile, probably ducks: one stands on rocks, while the other twirls above, and they are surrounded by leafy, flowering plants. In places, the face shows the imprint of a fine latticework that appears to be printed in blue. On the reverse, the dish is lined with alternating wide and narrow compartments, delimited by pairs of fillets and closed at the ends by a line, one near the edge and the other, double, at the junction of the wall with the foot. The largest have a ring surrounding an oval shape, while the others have a double cord topped by two dashes.
