Dish reproduction
The dish is complete. It is circular with a plain rim. The rim is thick, flat and wide. The wall slopes towards the bottom and is not very high; the bottom is small and flat. The dish rests on a ring-shaped foot, whose wide, flat base is unglazed. There is a hand-painted inscription in black under the base: Musée du Louvre; the decoration is hand-painted in underglaze blue. The painted decoration occupies the marli, the wall and the bottom of the face and reverse. It features plant, animal and scenic motifs. The decoration on the marli is delimited by a band and a fillet. It consists of two repeated cross motifs. The motif at the top and base consists of a crowned cherub’s bust, seen from the front and with its wings outstretched; it is supported by scrolls. The one at the top is framed by two cherubs in profile, while the one at the sock is framed by two fantastic winged animals. The other motif consists of floral and plant motifs, surrounded by birds and insects. The decoration on the wall is delimited by two double rings and consists of a stylized plant motif distributed in a cross pattern. The background motif features a male figure standing on a terrace, seen from the front, his right hand resting on a vertical stick and his left on his hip; he is wearing a short tunic and a helmet. He is surrounded by trees and buildings. The decoration on the reverse consists of a band painted on the border near the edge, on the wall and on the outer edge of the foot. The border features a plant motif with beads arranged in a cross, alternating with a St. Andrew’s cross with four beads; the wall features the same plant motif as the border.
