Deaf lantern

Handcrafted, black-painted tin lantern in 5 parts: base, body, capital, capital finial and round handle. Door decorated with simple, straight half-moon motifs, punched on the body and capital. The motifs are relatively symmetrical. Door decorated with a half-moon punch solar motif. Complete object. Folded sheet metal and wire assembly.

Historical context

The above object is a lantern found mainly in rural Quebec. It is used to light the way between the house, the barn and the stable, where the animals spend the night.

The shape of this object allows the wearer to see in the dark, without being seen. What’s more, the light-blocking shutter is also useful for limiting the risk of fire, especially when visiting a barn where fodder and cereals are stored.
