Cup with handle

The cup is complete; there is a long crack on the wall which has been consolidated with metal studs. It is cylindrical in shape. The wall is very slightly domed, with a straight rim and a plain top. The wall curves at the base towards the sock, which is flat. The cup rests on a ring-shaped foot, with a beveled outer rim. The base is wide and free of glaze. The bottom is recessed and flat. The cup is fitted with a vertical, ear-shaped handle; its upper end is folded down and rests on the wall, while the other rests on the wall. The cross-section is oval, with a vertical central groove. There is a mark painted in blue under the bottom: a square with intersecting lines. There are flaws in the glaze under the base. The outer wall features three large dark-grey metal studs, the ends of which have been inserted into three pairs of holes running through the wall; the ends of the studs have been riveted to the inner wall of the cup; the decoration is applied by transfer printed and hand-painted in blue underglaze and in polychrome overglaze; the printed decoration is blue and the painted decoration is in blue, red and green with gilding; it features the Queens motif. The decoration is on the outer wall and handle. On the outer wall, it consists of vertical panels, painted alternately in blue and in reserve; they are framed by a gilded border. The blue-painted panels are adorned with a gold-painted floral and plant motif, and a flower in reserve on a red background with a gold-painted heart. The other panels are adorned with two different vegetal motifs painted in green, red and turquoise; one motif consists of long leafy stems topped with two large flowers, while the other motif consists of a bamboo stem at the bottom and two crossed flowering stems hanging from the top. There’s also a blue-printed ribbon at the base of the outer wall, adorned with leafy stems and flowers in reserve. The handle is adorned with three superimposed plant motifs painted in red. Gilding has been added to the top of the cup rim, but has largely disappeared.
