Coffee mug

The cup is complete. It is cylindrical in shape, with a slightly tapered wall at the top, and a straight rim with a tapered top. The base of the wall is slightly swollen. It rests on a flat, wide, unglazed ring foot. The underside of the base is recessed and flat. It is fitted with a vertical handle of oval cross-section; its lower end has a small tail. There are slight flaws in the inner glaze; the decoration is hand-painted and incised. It covers the outside of the cup, as well as the inside rim and handle. The decoration is of the scenic lake type and is treated in Imari. It is hand-painted in two-tone blue underglaze, then traced and painted in iron red, with gold highlights, over glaze. The inner rim is decorated with a blue tracery fillet. The outer rim is decorated with a braid trimmed with triangles made of inclined lines. The decoration on the outer wall consists of a series of islands traced and painted in blue, and topped with mountains traced and painted in blue and faded red in places. One of the islands supports an open building with a gabled roof, traced in blue and painted in faded blue and red with gilding; another supports a tall pagoda traced and painted in blue and red with gilding. Various trees, including pine trees, are traced and painted in blue, some with added red and gilding. Mountains, outlined and painted in blue, rise up in the distance. The wall on either side of the handle is decorated with ribbed leaves in red. The base of the cup is decorated with a row of oval spirals in red. The lower part of the cup is decorated with three superimposed bulges, the furrows between them painted blue. The outside of the handle features a vertical groove with a leafy stem outlined in blue with gilding. A shiny brown iron-based coating covers the top of the rim.
