Historical context

The pattern for this fringed moosehide mitten is made up of 9 pieces: 3 fringed pieces, the top, the palm, 2 pieces for the thumb and the wrist, all sewn together. This pagoda-shaped wrist is a borrowing from European gloves and mittens. In the past, native mittens were cut straight at the wrist.
