Historical context
Under construction since May 1962 and officially inaugurated on October 14, 1966, the Montreal metro is Canada’s second-largest subway system after Toronto. By 1967, it already boasted 26 stations on three lines. Its management was initially entrusted to the Commission de transport de Montréal (CTM), which succeeded the Montreal Tramways Company after the latter’s assets were taken over by the City of Montreal in June 1951.
