La Terra de Hochelaga Nella Nova Francia
TERRA DE HOCHELAGA. The scene depicted is taken from Jacques Cartier’s Relation, in particular the third voyage (1535). It shows a plan of the village of Hochelaga in a landscape with a box containing captions. In the landscape on the left, the first occurrence of “Montreal” on a map appears, cf. the inscription in capital letters: “MONTE REAL”. Jacques Cartier is shown in the foreground shaking hands with King Agouhanna. Settled on the island for several hundred years, the St. Lawrence Iroquoians welcomed Jacques Cartier and his men to their village of Hochelaga. The Malouin navigator’s account was the subject of a map drawn by cartographer Giacomo Gastaldi for geographer Giovanni Battista Ramusio’s book Delle Navigationi et Viaggi, published in Venice in 1565. That’s why this controversial map is better known as the Ramusio map. In any case, this is the first time that “Mont Real” appears in cartography.
