Box

The box is complete, except for a few small broken fragments which have been repaired with glue. It is rectangular in shape, with rounded corners. In cross-section, the wall is domed, slightly narrowed at the top, before presenting an outwardly open rim with a plain edge. At its base, the wall curves towards the bottom, which rests on a straight pedestal; the bottom is recessed and flat. Inside, the box has two divisions molded into its width, dividing it into three thirds of equal size. These divisions are straight and thin; their top features a double-lobed head with a concave center, while the wings have a concave top. A mold line is visible on the outer wall, at each end. Beneath the bottom, there’s a mark printed in blue and another made by intaglio printing. The printed mark is a cartouche of stylized scrolls adorned with flowers and leaves, enclosing a mark in cursive letters: Sicilian. The transfer printed decoration is blue in color and features a European landscape motif. The molded decoration is visible on the outer wall. The printed decoration is visible on the outer wall and under the inner rim. The molded decoration consists of slight concave and vertical pinches at intervals on the ends and on the wall. The printed decoration on the outer wall, affixed to the opposite walls, consists of a dark blue terrace, topped with reserved scrolls and supporting an Italian Renaissance-style central building, a column and a church steeple, all framed by trees and leafy stems; mountains are visible in the background. The decoration below the inner border consists of a frieze composed of two distinct elements: a narrow band adorned with a row of shamrocks separated by a spearhead near the edge, followed by a blue background adorned with scrolls and leaves in reserve. The main decoration consists of two different sets. The decoration is clearly rendered. The cut-out of the decoration is visible, particularly under the inner rim.
